Biewer Terrier vs. Parti-Yorkie

You may ask, they look the same, so what's the difference?

The Biewer Terrier is widely recognized as the first breed in AKC history to be established as a purebred through scientific DNA testing, rather than relying on traditional pedigree records. In 2007, DNA studies determined the breed was distinct from its Yorkshire Terrier roots, leading to its full AKC recognition in 2021.  Parti Yorkies and Biewer Terriers are both small, tri-colored (black/white/tan) dogs derived from Yorkshire Terrier bloodlines, but they differ in breed status, markings and temperament.  If a Parti Yorkie is DNA tested, they will test as a Yorkshire Terrier NOT a Biewer Terrier

The Biewer Terrier is a distinct, AKC-recognized breed with specific white-paw/chest markings; a symmetrical distribution of color (a white chest and legs, and a tri-color head).  They have a long, plume-like tail. Biewer Terriers are often described as generally calm, mellow, social, less barky and more patient with kids.  They are less "terrier-like" or barky compared to the Yorkshire Terrier.  The Biewer Terrier bark is more of an alarm bark rather than just barking to hear the sound of their own voice.

In contrast, the Parti Yorkie is a color-variant Yorkie with more random white patches or "parti-colored" coats.  Parti Yorkies can be register with AKC as an alternate color of the Yorkshire Terrier but CANNOT be shown in Confirmation events because they do not meet the Yorkshire Terrier Breed Standard.  Yorkies (including Parti) often have docked tails in the USA.  The traditional Yorkies are often more spirited, stubborn, yappy and territorial. They tend to choose their favorite family member and can be aggressive toward others.

We strongly suggest to families whether they are getting a puppy from us or a different breeder, to ask the breeder for proof of the puppy parents' DNA testing.  This way, you know what to expect in the behavior and the potential health risks of your new fur baby. â€‹â€‹â€‹

Which one is right for you?

  • Choose a Parti Yorkie if you love the classic spunky Yorkie personality but want a unique "patchwork" look.  â€‹

  • Choose a Biewer Terrier if you prefer a slightly more laid-back, "family-oriented" companion and want to avoid the "terrier" intensity.
